Media Freedom in the member states (Brussels)

BRUSSELS - The AEJ, in its fiftieth anniversary year, has the honour to invite you to a seminar on “Media Freedom in the EU member states” organized in cooperation and with the support of the European Parliament (DG Communication) at 12.15 on May 8 2012 at the Parliament, Paul-Henri Spaak Building Room PHS 7C50.
 
The EU claims global leadership in upholding freedom of expression and media freedom. Yet the European Commission says it lacks authority to act against member states when journalists’ work is restricted by harsh media laws or by threats of criminal prosecution.
  • Why has the EU lost ground in international measures of media freedom and what might be done by Parliament and Commission to reverse that decline ? Should the EU seek to regulate press freedom standards?
  • Does the EU apply double standards turning a blind eye to what happens in member states while condemning press freedom violations elsewhere ?
  • What impact will the EU’s accession to the European Convention of Human Rights have on EU law making, member states and European journalism ?
