The UK news industry - plurality, journalistic standards and social media
Guests of Honour: John Hardie, Chief Executive Officer, ITN and Maryam Nemazee, News Anchor, Bloomberg TV
This seminar will offer a timely opportunity for discussion on the key issues affecting the delivery of news in the UK: on television, radio, in print and on new platforms such as Twitter.
We expect the agenda to develop further to reflect latest issues in press regulation and ethics. It already includes discussion on media standards and practices, as controversies over phone-hacking and journalistic methods provoke widespread political and social repercussions, including the closure of the News of the World, and a planned review into the future of press regulation by the PCC.
Delegates will also consider the challenges created by social media, in particular Twitter, in the wake of super-injunctions as well as emerging issues in news plurality, and how consumption on emerging platforms, such as YouView and mobile, and the ability to share content via social media, is altering the news media landscape and impacting on the business models of news organisations.
We are delighted to include keynote addresses from Benedict Evans, Consultant, Enders Analysis; John Hardie, Chief Executive Officer, ITN and Maryam Nemazee, News Anchor, Bloomberg TV.
Further confirmed speakers include: Heather Blake, UK Director, Reporters Without Borders; Professor Natalie Fenton, Co-Director, Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre, University of London; Will Gore, Public Affairs Director, Press Complaints Commission; Mary Hockaday, Head, Newsroom, BBC; Jim Latham, Secretary, Broadcast Journalism Training Council; Mark Lewis, Consultant, Taylor Hampton Solicitors; Sandy MacIntyre, Vice President and Director of News, AP Television News; John McAndrew, Associate Editor, Sky News; Martin Moore, Director, Media Standards Trust; Nic Newman, Visiting Fellow, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University and former World Editor, BBC News Website; Deborah Rayner, Managing Editor, EMEA, CNN and Michelle Stanistreet, General Secretary, National Union of Journalists. Further senior participants are being approached.
