NEW YORK - The 2012 Pulitzer Prizes, awarded on April 16, underscore the growing journalistic trend towards online reporting.
Of the 14 Pulitzer Prizes that were awarded for journalism, five went to non-traditional news outlets: the online-native news websites Huffington Post and Politico, Seattle’s weekly newspaper thestranger.com and wire services Associated Press and Agence France-Presse.
The Pulitzer officials note that, in total, digital content “played a role in seven winning entries: Public Service, Breaking News Reporting, Investigative Reporting, Explanatory Reporting, National Reporting, Editorial Cartooning and Breaking News Photography.”
The 14 Pulitzers for journalism came in 13 categories. There was no winner in the category editorial writing; two awards were given for investigative reporting (to the Seattle Times and Associated Press).
