WASHINGTON/GENEVA - In light of ongoing developments related to the release of diplomatic cables by the organization Wikileaks, and the publication of information contained in those cables by mainstream news organizations, the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression see fit to recall a number of international legal principles. The rapporteurs call upon States and other relevant actors to keep these principles in mind when responding to the aforementioned developments  

MADRID/PARIS 1- 35 civil society organizations and many international experts on freedom of expression from 25 countries today sent a letter to the French Minister of Interior Brice Hortefeux and members of the French parliament calling for the withdrawal of a proposed law allowing the authorities to carry out “behaviour checks” on members of the public and organisations wanting to reuse information obtained from public bodies. 

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament allocated € 1,5 million to investigative journalism research grants in 2010 and 2011. However last week the money has been withdrawn following a long struggle about editorial independence and editorial confidentiality. But the MEPs behind the project vow to continue the work in 2011.

Mediafair enables journalists to brand themselves and their work. Mediafair would make journalists to spend less time looking for the right tools, and spend more time using the best tools to create in-depth stories and get them to their public.

BRUSSELS - 1,1 million euro to investigative journalism research grants! The European Parliament allocated the money for a pilot project, the call for proposals is out, and the news have stirred a debate in Brussels. Even if that was the only effect, the initiative by the EP would have been worth the while.
