Database journalism (CAR) - 5 & 6 Nov.
LONDON - Learn the data journalism behind the Iraq War Logs
This two-day course will teach you how to use Microsoft Excel and Access to analyse databases – either to find story ideas or to provide more depth and context. James Ball will demonstrate how the techniques taught over the two days were used and extended in the analysis of the Iraq War Logs, disclosed by Wikileaks.
James Ball, Development Producer for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and Chief Data Analyst on the TBIJ/Channel 4 Dispatches investigation into the Iraq War Logs will explain how data journalism powered the process. The demonstration will show how data journalism techniques revealed 1,300 allegations of Iraqi-on-Iraqi torture, 300 allegations of coalition abuse and the death of nearly 700 civilians at checkpoints and convoys.
