Poverty and critical journalism
BRUSSELS - The Brussels Center for Journalism Studies (BCJS) invites you to its round table on poverty and critical journalism with internationally acclaimed Indian journalist P. Sainath, author of the non-fiction bestseller Everybody Loves a Good Drought (1996) and recipient of the ‘Asian Nobel Prize’, the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
The round table will take place on Wednesday 24 November, 6.30 pm - 9.30 pm, in the heart of Brussels.
The round table will focus on:
1. Journalists as watchdogs: Can stories about inequality contribute to better policies?
2. Journalism for the people or the shareholders: Whose interests do the media serve?
3. Journalism by the people: Are poor communities allowed to speak in their own voice?
4. Journalism and education: What can journalism schools do to improve reporting on poverty?
With the participation of Stef Adriaenssens (sociologist, HUB), Marjorie Blomme (co-author of ‘Volk’), Hilde Boeykens (SOS Kinderdorpen), Dirk De Wilde (De Tijd), Joseph Ntamahungiro (EURAC), Sabine Poleyn (co-author ‘Vlaams mediaplan voor het zuiden’), John Vandaele (Mo*) and others.

The Round Table is part of the International Week on Poverty and Social Exclusion organised by the Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel (HUB) and fits in with the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.
