White Elephant at Raindance FIlm Festival (London)
LONDON - The short documentary WHITE ELEPHANT will have its World Premiere in London in the Apollo Cinema (Picadilly Circus) as part of the shorts programme 'Vivid Chronicles' at 2.15 PM on Tuesday October 4th 2011.
"White Elephant successfully conveys some of the Kafkaesque dimensions of a country which isn’t working -
the inefficiency, the inaction, the lethargy and the bizarre rituals of normality."
(Christopher Hird, former chair of the Sheffield International Documentary Foundation, founding chair of BRITDOC Foundation, trustee of the Grierson Trust.)
Somebody passed by one day:
‘Mama, does the Post really work?
If I leave this letter with you, will it ever arrive?’
I told him: 'of course it will'. He started laughing.
'I know for sure it will never reach its destination.'
The Central Post-Office and its employees in Kinshasa, DR Congo. This grandiose relic of the colonial past has trapped its employees in a frozen timewarp from which they are planning their escape. From past to present, through the cracks in the walls, and leaks in the ceilings, we glimpse present-day Congo.
