We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the victims of the tragedy that took place at Charlie Hebdo’s offices in Paris today.

As an organisation promoting independent and courageous journalism and freedom of speech in Europe, we speak out against acts of resentment, oppression or violation of freedom of speech. Today’s events have shown that freedom of speech is not self-evident. It cannot be taken for granted. It is put to the test every day.

What happened today must not prompt a chilling effect among journalists, cartoonists, writers and media outlets across Europe, but rather lead to a universal shout-out against acts of censorship of any kind.
