Tom Van de Weghe is an award-winning Belgian Journalist and foreign affairs correspondent for VRT.

From 2007 through September 2012, Tom was the first Belgian-TV correspondent in Asia. He established VRT's Beijing Bureau, producing crossmedia stories for television, radio and online. He also reported from 'forbidden' territories such as North Korea, Tibet, Xinjiang and Myanmar.

With over 17 years of experience as a journalist, he's skilled in the entire process of multimedia journalism for the 21st century.

For his book "Tom in Alle Staten" he travelled 20,000 kms around the US to discover a polarised country in the run-up to the US presidential elections. "A prophetic book that predicted how Trump could in fact win," according to reviews.

Tom wrote about his experiences in China in his bestselling book "Beestig China". Together with his wife, he created the book 'Lekkel!", a culinary travel adventure through Asia.

Tom Van de Weghe led VRT's Washington Bureau as bureau chief from 2012 until the end of 2016. Upon his return to the VRT News headquarters in Brussel he was working as a geopolitical risk analyst, building on his expertise of China, the United States, Russia and North Korea.

In 2018 Tom received a J.S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford University. He was researching the impact of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain on journalism. He was focusing on video forensics and authentication.

In September 2023, he started working for VRT NWS on the monthly podcast China Beyond the Wall about developments in China, together with Veerle De Vos as co-host. Since January 2024, Van de Weghe has been curator of the Winter Circus in Ghent, together with Peter Hinssen, among others.
