Award

On 21 May, the European Parliament launched the call for entries for the fifth edition of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism. The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism is awarded each year around 16 October, the day on which the journalist was murdered.

The annual prize recognises outstanding reporting that promotes or defends the core principles and values of the European Union. These include human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, human rights and the rule of law.

Professional journalists of any nationality can compete for the prize individually or as a team. To do so, they must submit in-depth pieces that have been published or broadcast by media in one of the 27 EU countries. The aim of the prize is to support professional journalism and emphasise its importance in guaranteeing freedom and equality and protecting human dignity, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The winner is chosen by an independent jury consisting of representatives of the press and civil society from the 27 EU countries and representatives of the main journalism associations in Europe. The award ceremony takes place every year around 16 October, the day on which Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered.

With the prize and prize money of €20,000, the European Parliament emphasises its strong support for investigative journalism and the importance of a free press. In recent years, the Parliament has warned against attempts within and outside the EU to undermine media pluralism.

Journalists can submit their article(s) online via https://daphnejournalismprize.eu/ until midnight (Central European Time) on 31 July 2025.
