Inspiration and insights for local and regional investigative journalists
The VVOJ Regional Afternoon will take place in Brussels on 21 April. This is definitely an event for you if you’d like to find out more about:
- an award-winning series of local news articles on property scandals;
- requesting government documents in Flanders;
- EU policy relevant to regional and local news;
- grants for Belgian and Dutch local and regional journalism.
Laurens Kindt (journalist, De Krant van West-Vlaanderen) and Olaf Verhaeghe (data journalist, De Tijd) will talk about their investigation into property scandals involving mayors. The investigation brought three mayors to court and won the Belfius Press Award in the ‘local press’ category
WOB expert Peter Verhaeghe (staff member at Straten-Generaal, director of the League for Human Rights) shares his tips for requesting administrative documents and information, as regulated by the Flemish Administrative Decree.
EU policy is not just a distant concern, but also relevant to regions. Lise Witteman (Brussels desk, Follow the Money) offers ten tips for regional journalists
Ides Debruyne (director of Journalismfund Europe) presents grants from the Journalismfund for local news projects in Belgium and the Netherlands. To give a preview: the local media outlets Bruzz (Brussels) and AT5 (Amsterdam) received a grant for their series on the city of the future.
The Regiomiddag takes place on 21 April in Brussels at the Huis van de Journalist, Zennestraat 21, 1000 Brussels.
Doors open at 1.30 pm. The programme starts at 2 pm.
