ACCRA - In Destination Ghana, we follow four people from the African diaspora. Each has a different life story, but there is also something that connects them: none of them has ever set foot on the African continent

They have decided to travel to the African continent for the first time, in search of their roots. They want to find out what ‘home’ means to them and whether they feel more at home in a country where everyone looks like them, where they experience less racism and discrimination, and where they can finally feel like themselves.

After their trip to Ghana, we follow them back to the countries where they live and see what impact the journey has had on their lives. How do they now view the world, and what will their next steps be?

Destination Ghana will be a four-part series, with each episode focusing on one character. The series portrays the African mindset, which, despite a globalised economy, still grapples with inequality, prejudice and racism. It highlights the darker side of life for a Black person outside Africa and the need for an environment that addresses the questions of many people from the diaspora.

PIM

Pim grew up in Mechelen with a foster family who later adopted her. Her biological mother struggled with a mental health condition and, when Pim was a teenager, gave her a letter containing the name and telephone number of her biological father. She also received a postcard from a man in Ghana. At the time, she paid it no mind, content with the life she had.

Now, as an adult, she is facing an identity crisis. She wants to understand where she comes from, how she ended up in a foster family, what happened to her parents and why her father was unable to raise her himself. With only the old letter and the postcard as clues, she seeks help from a friend and filmmaker, Adams Mensah, who has Ghanaian roots and experience with similar stories.

Their search begins with her adoptive parents in Mechelen and leads them to Ghana, where her father comes from. It becomes a journey to her origins, her family and the hope of finally discovering her true identity.
