BRUSSELS – Drinking water is arguably one of the most strictly regulated foodstuffs. After all, it is vital for life and consumed in large quantities every day. The water that European water companies pump through their pipes is clean. But what about the water that comes out at the other end of the pipe?

Three journalists, from Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark, have gone with the flow and discovered how the plastic water pipes now commonly installed in homes are leaking suspicious chemicals into the drinking water that are potentially harmful to humans. The Flemish section of the investigation appeared in Knack.

The drinking water project is the first cross-border investigation in which journalists from various European countries have collaborated closely. It received support not only from the Pascal Decroos Fund in Brussels, but also from the Fund for Special Journalistic Projects in Amsterdam.

The investigative team consisted of Kaare Gotfredsen, Luuk Sengers, Chris Vermeire and Marleen Teugels. The investigation into drinking water is the first project by the Investigative Reporters Network Europe (IRENE), which was set up specifically for cross-border investigations.
