Narco Estado

JUAREZ - From 2009 until 2011, Dutch war photographer Teun Voeten focused his attention on the drug-related violence that has been destabilising Mexico. He visited Ciudad Juárez, the epicentre of the violence, as well as other hotspots such as Culiacán and Michoacán.

With introductory essays by El Paso-based anthropologist Howard Campbell and Culiacan-based writer Javier Valdez Cardenas, this hard-hitting photobook attempts to explain why the drug violence in Mexico can no longer be ignored as a fringe criminal problem, given that it is eroding the very foundations of our civilisation. The sober yet strong book design is the work of renowned Dutch designer Jan Kleingeld, who also designed A Ticket To, Voeten's first photobook.

Renowned war photographer Teun Voeten, who is renowned for his earlier work in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone and Colombia, is working on a photo book about drug violence with a grant from the Pascal Decroos Fund.

This project was made possible with the support of Fonds voor Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten, (Amsterdam), Fonds Pascal Decroos voor Bijzondere Journalistiek (Brussels), Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund (New York).

Voeten won an award in the Foreign News category of the annual Dutch Photojournalistic Competition, the Silvered Camera, with his Mexico photography.
