The Knight Digital Media Center gives news startups some basic lessons on business plans after the Chicago News Cooperation, a two-year-old nonprofit news site, announced that it is suspending its contributions to the Midwest pages of the New York Times.

LOS ANGELES - The Chicago News Cooperation, a two-year-old nonprofit news site, has announced that it is suspending its contributions to the Midwest pages of the New York Times and its website as of February 26 to reevaluate its business model and determine "if there is a more sustainable path to the future".

The announcement prompted the Knight Digital Media Center to emphasize that for starting news foundations a focus on revenue is equally, if not more, important as spending and content. The Media Center formulated three lessons for news startups to consider lest they go down the same path as the Chicago News Coop.
