Kinshuk Surjan's debut documentary film Marching in the Dark is under consideration in the category Best Documentary Feature for the 97th Academy Awards next year.

The documentary feature sheds light on the high suicide rate among farmers in rural regions in India and takes as its subject a group of women farmers who recently lost their husbands and decided to meet a local psychologist and activist to share their stories and problems and help others in their grief. In this act of silent rebellion against a patriarchal society, the 28-year-old introverted Sanjeevani finds the courage to be self-reliant.

After having already received several awards and nominations at film festivals across Europe as well as in Kinshuk's native India, Marching in the Dark is now also under consideration for the 97th Academy Awards in the category Best Documentary Feature.

The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
