ATHENS - Journalist Socrates Giolias was shot at his house's entrance in the district of Ilioupolis. It is reported that police collected from this point minimum 15 shells from a 9mm firearm.

According to media, at 05:25 this morning, three strangers dressed in police outfits shot him after a false call to inform that his car was being stolen. The culprits escaped in a stolen car reportedly found burnt a few kilometres away.

There are various speculations circulating within media as to the cause of the unprecedented type of murder. These centre around the possibility that the sports journalist was preparing an in-depth report in the sports world which would shed light on many 'abnormalities' and that the assassination was a way of 'squaring accounts'.

The victim's lawyer stated on television that the journalist was investigating dozens of cases and during the last few years was receiving threats against his life. Giolias was for many years a close associate of known journalist Makis Triantafylopoulos, a controversial journalist who uses his TV programmes to "unveil" major political and social scandals.

Currently, he directed Radio Thema and was co-founder of the well-known Greek blog troktiko.blogspot.com. He leaves a wife and a two-year-old child behind.
