NY - The Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund supports photographer Teun Voeten for his Mexico project that was initialized with an FPD grant: The Hell of Juarez.

The Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund has committed $100,000 to support experienced independent photographers working to document critical issues that have been overlooked or underrepresented by mainstream media.

The 2011 Emergency Fund photographers will tackle issues of local, national, and global concern. Selected projects include an in-depth look at migrant workers in Dubai, an examination of industrialization in Russia’s resource-rich Arctic and an exploration of an impending environmental health disaster in Colombia.

The 2011 Emergency Fund photographers are: Balazs Gardi, Emily Schiffer, Ian Teh,Jonas Bendiksen, Julius Mwelu, Justin Jin, Stephen Ferry, Teun Voeten, Yuri Kozyrevand Zalmai.

The Emergency Fund supports experienced photographers with a commitment to documenting social issues, working long-term, and engaging with an issue over time. Projects address critical global issues that have not received the attention they deserve, or budding crises that are still over the horizon. Photographers retain the copyright to their work and distribute it widely: through traditional and new media, in collaboration with nonprofits or NGOs, and on the Emergency Fund website.

Each year, a diverse group of photography professionals nominate 100 professional photographers to submit proposals. An independent Editorial Board selects 10 to 20 photographers—based on the strength of their proposals and the importance of the issues they propose to address—to support.
